Caffeine is so common today that we are barely even aware of it.
We might joke about "needing" our morning coffee to get us out of bed or into work, and about cola or chocolate making our kids "bounce off the walls." But do we really think about ourselves or our children being on a psychoactive drug? I think not.
You might be surprized to learn that the effects of caffeine are actually so similar to so-called hard drugs such as cocaine and meth that traffickers and dealers frequently use caffeine powder to "cut" or dilute these drugs.
That's not to say that caffeine is anywhere near as harmful as these substances -- far from it. But it does carry risks, and it is important to know when you are consuming it. Caffeine is hidden in many parts of the Western diet, so it is worth knowing the amount of caffeine in common foods and drinks.
