Reefer Madness

Reefer Madness is a joke to the pro-legalization marijuana movement -- an extreme approach to deterring weed smoking through fear, that now seems ridiculous. But was there a grain of truth to this cautionary tale?

Many people indulge in occasional recreational marijuana use with no negative consequences. A proportion run into difficulties, as their non problematic use crosses over into what is technically termed, marijuana abuse. A proportion develop marijuana addiction. And some develop mental health problems, which can range from mild symptoms, to severe substance-induced psychosis.

And the younger you are when you start smoking marijuana, the greater the risk of developing this debilitating condition. Some studies show that younger teens have six times the risk of developing psychosis than those who don't touch the stuff. So if you are a teen, hold off on trying weed until you are older, and if you have any mental illness in your family, don't experiment with it at all.

Psychosis can cause very serious lifelong problems, and isn't worth the risk.
