In today's hyperconnected world, most of us have, at some time or another, received spam or online scams, unwanted or unpleasant email messages or texts, or seen something about ourselves online that makes us cringe.
For many of us, this is a daily occurrence, and we simply brush it off as a nuisance of the modern world, and get on with our day. But sometimes, you are left with that unsettling feeling that can keep you awake at night. Does that person really know who I am? How did they find out so much about me? And worst of all, can they hurt me, or someone I care about?
It may surprise you to know that cyberbullying, cyberharrassment, and cyberstalking are all recognized in law. So if you are being victimized online, you may have a case against your harasser. Keep meticulous records, and, if it continues, take the evidence to your local police station.
And if you are bothered by nuisance messages on facebook or such, hide their content, or use the ultimate faux pas and unfriend them. Just as you shouldn't waste your time, emotions and energy on relationships that don't provide you with any positive value, don't feel compelled to stay in any online friendships if they drain you emotionally.
